Our Lady’s Forever

The multi-channel video was filmed at Our Lady’s Hospital, a defunct mental institution in Cork, Ireland. The three-story red-brick building became not only the filming location but also the work’s fully legitimate protagonist. The work was inspired by a theatre play about an unhappy love, written by a young schizophrenic whom the artist had met several years earlier. Konik made an attempt to translate the text’s contents and structure into the language of video, creating a timeless space filled with emotions, desires and dreams. Highly poetic and impressionist, the work is presented as seven simultaneous projections arranged in gallery space or on monitors. Lacking a linear narrative, the story has no beginning or end, and its protagonists, searching for each other in vain in the labyrinths of the empty building, resemble phantoms existing beyond time.

´I met M a few years ago, but I don't know what has happened to him since. In February I departed for Ireland and took his poem and play with me. In Cork I often went to the deserted old psychiatric hospital Our Lady's Hospital of 1852, and its St. Kevin's Ward, which for 4 years stands empty …210 deserted rooms. The last patient left its walls in April 2002. In April 2006 I saw a person there with a dog, lying on a bench. Later on there was only the dog…The dog was taken by dogcatchers on May 6, 2006`. – these words, spoken by the protagonist of Anna Konik’s film Our Lady’s Forever, are part of the artist’s own story. Several years ago she met a young man suffering from schizophrenia who gave her the text of a play he had written. The play is a kind of a love story, a story about the dream to change physically into the person one loves. It is full of strange images born in the author’s over-sensitiv mind. The artist took the play with her when she was leaving, in spring 2006 to Cork in Ireland. There she discovered Our Lady’s, an abandoned psychiatric hospital, where she made her film Our Lady’s Forever, to be presented as a multi-channel single-screen video installation. The film is a story with no beginning or end, showing two persons – a man and a woman – called A and M, searching for each other, wandering around the empty corridors and rooms of the dilapidating building. The scenes, illuminated with strange, blue light, are a blend of reality and abstraction, of the real-world and the imaginary, and the whole film is mysterious and oblique. Our Lady’s Forever is the most poetic of Anna Konik’s works so far, but also dealing with similar issues of alienation, strange sensitivity or loneliness as her earlier works, Toys, Transparency, or In the Middle of the Way. Wielokanałowa wideoinstalacja powstała w irlandzkim Cork, w scenerii opuszczonego szpitala dla umysłowo chorych Our Lady’s Hospital. Trzypiętrowy budynek z czerwonej cegły stał się nie tylko miejscem akcji dramatu, ale też równoprawnym bohaterem pracy. Inspiracją do jej powstania był dramat o niespełnieniu w miłości, napisany przez młodego schizofrenika, którego artystka poznała kilka lat wcześniej. Konik podjęła próbę przełożenia treści i struktury tekstu na język wideo, kreując ponadczasową przestrzeń przesyconą emocjami, pragnieniem i marzeniem. To bardzo poetyckie i impresyjne dzieło prezentowane jest na siedmiu symultanicznych projekcjach rozmieszczonych w galeryjnej przestrzeni lub na monitorach. Opowieść pozbawiona jest liniowej narracji, nie ma też początku ani końca, a jej bohaterowie, bezskutecznie szukający się w labiryntach pustego budynku, przypominają fantomy istniejące poza czasem.

„M. poznałam przed paroma laty, ale nie wiem, co się z nim teraz dzieje. W lutym wyjechałam do Irlandii i zabrałam ze sobą jego wiersz i szkic do dramatu. W Cork chodziłam często do opuszczonego starego szpitala psychiatrycznego Our Ladys Hospital z 1852 z odziałem St. Kevin's, który od 4 lat stoi opustoszały... 210 pustych pokoi... Ostatni pacjent opuścił jego mury w kwietniu 2002 roku. W kwietniu 2006 widziałam tam człowieka z psem, leżącego na ławce, potem już tylko psa... Psa zabrali hycle 6 maja 2006.” – te słowa, wypowiadane przez bohaterkę filmu Anny Konik „Our Lady’s Forever”, są jednocześnie opowieścią samej artystki. Kilka lat temu poznała ona młodego mężczyznę chorego na schizofrenię, który podarował jej niezwykły dramat. Utwór ten przedstawia historię „miłości”, jest opowieścią o marzeniu, by zmienić się cieleśnie w osobę, którą się kocha. Jest to tekst pełen niezwykłych obrazów zrodzonych przez nadwrazliwa wyobraźnię autora. Artystka zabrała ze sobą dramat, gdy wiosną 2006 roku wyjeżdżała do Cork w Irlandii. Tam odkryła opuszczony szpital psychiatryczny Our Lady’s Hospital i zrealizowała w nim film przeznaczony do symultanicznej projekcji na kilku ekranach „Our Lady’s Forever”. Film jest opowieścią bez początku i bez końca, ukazuje dwie osoby – kobietę i mężczyznę – o pseudonimach A. i M., które poszukują się, krążąc po korytarzach i pokojach niszczejącego szpitala. Obrazy w filmie sytuują się na granicy realności i abstrakcji, rzeczywistości i wyobrażenia, a sceny skąpane są w niezwykłym, niebieskawym świetle. Całość jest tajemnicza i niedopowiedziana. „Our Lady’s Forever” to najbardziej poetycka z realizacji Anny Konik, ale bliska też jej wcześniejszym pracom, jak „Toys”, „Przezroczystość”, czy „In the middle of the way”, które poruszają problem wyobcowania, odmiennej wrażliwości, samotności.
