A Song of Humble Beauty

On enduring beauty, work, and contrasts
I observed various artisans at work. They were from Karachi, Hala, Bhit Shah, and from villages in the District Tando Allahyar and Mirpurkhas – all in the Pakistani region of Sindh, whose name is derived from the Sanskrit síndhu meaning ‘river’ or ‘stream’, in the lower reaches of the Indus. This mighty river is the region’s artery of life, but it may also become a powerful element of destruction flooding the land and taking away all the possessions.
For generations, communities in Sindh have lived their lives to the rhythm of the Indus, cultivating the land or manufacturing handicrafts. Their work is a story of a complex coexistence of people, animals and culture, a coexistence subjected to difficult tests by climate change, as well as by neo-colonial and neo-imperial policies, with a huge impact on the production and transportation of food.
I saw the focused faces and skilful hands as the artisans created colourful objects of extraordinary and ethereal beauty. In addition to fulfilling the basic human right to live a dignified life, provide for family or perhaps achieve self-fulfilment, this arduous day-to-day work also involves the meditation of skills and practices handed down from generation to generation. These everyday objects reflecting a wealth of centuries-long experience conceal timeless beauty and also reflect the humility and dignity of man. Alas, refined forms, elaborate ornaments, profound themes and inspiring colour palettes often hide human deprivation and glaring inequalities in the modern world.
Postscript:
In making my previous projects, the video installation In the Same City, Under the Same Sky and the film Silence Heard Loud, I spoke to people who, for various reasons, fled to the EU in search of work. Cruelly experienced by fate and stripped of human dignity, they retained deep within an inner beauty and strength that drove them to a better life. I decided to look for the source of these outstanding qualities at the beginning of their journey in order to connect the two opposite shores….

O trwaniu w pięknie, w pracy i kontrastach
Przyglądałam się pracy rzemieślników z Karachi, Hala i Bhit Shah, a także z wiosek na terenach District Tando Allahyar i Mirpurkhas w Pakistanie. Miejsca te położone są w regionie Sindh, w dolnym biegu Indusu, który w sanskrycie síndhu oznacza "rzekę, strumień”. Indus jest aortą regionu, ale i potężnym żywiołem destrukcji w czasie powodzi, która raz daje, raz zabiera ludziom dobytek.
Społeczności w tym regionie od pokoleń żyją w rytm Indusu, uprawiając ziemię czy wytwarzając rzemiosło. Ich praca to opowieść o skomplikowanej koegzystencji ludzi, zwierząt i kultury, koegzystencji poddawanej trudnym testom przez zmiany klimatyczne, a także neokolonialną i neoimperialną politykę, mającą ogromny wpływ na produkcję i przepływ żywności.
Obserwując rzemieślników przy pracy, widziałam ich skupione twarze, zwinne i precyzyjne dłonie, spod których wyłaniały się niezwykłe, kolorowe i piękne formy. Ta mozolna, codzienna praca, to nie tylko realizacja podstawowego prawa człowieka do godnego życia, zapewnienia bytu rodzinie czy samorealizacji - to medytacja czynności przekazywanych z pokolenia na pokolenie. Efektem tej wyjątkowej umiejętności wytwarzania i kreowania formy, w której zbiegają się doświadczenia pokoleń, są przedmioty codziennego użytku, w których kryje się ponadczasowe piękno i odbija pokora i godność człowieka.
Uderzające jest jak bardzo, na tle wyrafinowanych form i ornamentów, bogactwa materii oraz palet kolorów, widać ludzki niedostatek i rażące nierówności we współczesnym świecie.
Postscriptum:
Realizując poprzednie projekty, video instalację W tym samym mieście, pod tym samym niebem i film, Silence Heard Loud, rozmawiałam z ludźmi, którzy z różnych powodów uciekali do EU w poszukiwaniu pracy. Okrutnie doświadczeni przez los, odarci z ludzkiej godności zachowali głęboko w sobie wewnętrzne piękno i siłę, które pchały ich do lepszego życia. Źródła tego wewnętrznego piękna postanowiłam szukać na początku ich drogi, by połączyć dwa przeciwne brzegi…
