It brings us to places where beautiful items are manufactured with patience and impressive mastery. Wandering through the streets, bazaars, workshops and local shops, we take a sneak peek at the work of traditional dyers, potters or embroiderers. What we gain is more than an ethnographic record. Scorched by the sun and washed by the mighty and awe-inspiring Indus, the Pakistani province of Sindh is a place where life carries on to a regular rhythm of work, faith and nature. A Song of Humble Beauty tells a story of ordinary people going about the same daily chores as their parents and grandparents did. The women toil the land and tend to their families, and the men labour for a better tomorrow in weaving, pottery and boiler workshops which dot the busy streets of Karachi. Life is hard, but people’s eyes show no sign of giving up. It is in their suffering that they find beauty and loyalty to their ancestral ways. Constantly betrayed by politicians and at the mercy of capricious nature, they find their only firm support in religion. In the evening, the daily hardships are eased by the sounds of Sufi songs issuing from the shrine of the mystic, saint and poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
A Song of Humble Beauty is a film about people who, despite poverty, political instability and an uncertain future, are able to find beauty in small things. It is about love that needs no words, about religion that lifts hearts, and about work being both a burden and a source of dignity. The picture shows the beauty of Sindh’s nature and the strength that people find in the face of adversity.
