TRANSPARENCY installation view, Center for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, 2004

The exhibition TERRITORIES OF PRESENCE consist of a video installation titled TRANSPARENCY by Anna Konik.
Anna Konik's project focuses on individuals who live in solitude and seem to have been almost entirely forgotten. Abandoned by society, they seem to live outside of time. Confined to their apartments and seemingly entrapped in their own stories, they are left to live solely with their memories. The artist has chosen to show us the image of people who have become estranged, been "stripped" of corporality, made transparent and thus invisible. Anna Konik has found four protagonists willing to tell their stories on camera. They recall their youth, loved ones, people they have met in life. They are lonely and desperately seek to form bonds, yet they prove surprisingly capable of impartial contemplation of their destinies, as if they were the most perceptive, detached observers. Their stories become cathartic experiences - their lives are retold over eight minutes during which time ceases to flow. These narratives seem like dark fables, bleak and bitter, with no chance of ending happily, while the storytellers themselves resemble characters from the plays of Samuel Beckett. The artist has transformed her source material (that is, each individuals' video-taped story) by multiplying and animating it. The entirety takes on the form of a passage.
